Internet Growth
As the Internet grew through the 1980s and early 1990s, many people realized the increasing need to be able to find and organize files and information. Projects such as Gopher, WAIS, and the FTP Archive list attempted to create ways to organize distributed data. It was the compilation of the prior that helped the world progress and change the way we live personally and economically. I am an avid Google fan so I have chosen to delve deeper into Google’s history because it is a site that has helped me form my way of life and the culture around me.
How am I Involved?
Click, hello new friends; Click goodbye to them too.
With each click comes a new result and that is the beauty of the Internet. I bought my pets’ food and paid bills today. I just clicked and it will be arriving on my front door by next week and thanks to the Internet my ability to plan and be responsible and efficient is in thanks to the Internet and especially to Google.
I love to use Google’s email: gmail.com. I found out that my sister-in-law’s new baby niece is going to live after a very traumatic birth. She has lost a big of brain function but still the Internet was there to make sure that had the up to date information as soon as the information was available. The burdens and joys are without a price sometimes.
I love to write. I feel similar to every artist in each media; artists respond to the world in new innovative ways (if they are to be a success). The artist world is changing in accordance to the movement of The Internet world. It has given many people voices, and it has given many family members time. This is reflected in the designs on the Internet sites, and the fast paced advertisements.
Google Milestones:
The following is a simplification of the long list of accomplishments and work Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, achieved in the creation of the Mecca that is Google.
Back before Google?
There were an unlikely pair that became a success. Both opinionated and strong they did not see eye to eye at first but thankfully the genius of Larry Page and Sergey Brin came together in a strong and organized way. The idea of organizing information and giving it a way to be communicated quickly, accurately, and efficiently was evident; the technology was working and genius; the only missing piece needed was a buyer.
Google.com was a hit for obvious reasons that all of its users could list on their hands and then some, however, in its pre teen years it was still in beta and the efficiency was still in need of tweaking. “That December, PC Magazine named Google one of its top 100 Web Sites and Search Engines for 1998” and it was safe to say that Google was moving up in the world.
Google Has Moved/ No Beta Search Engine
Mountain View, CA became the home for Google’s new headquarters. There was no beta search engine. What happened? AOL/Netscape selected Google as its web search service and helped push past 3 million searches per day. The beta label then became no more considering the college experiment was in such high demand.
I personally appreciated and benefited from the partnership of Google and Yahoo. The ease that came from being able to search Yahoo through Google and vice versa made finding what I was searching for twice as simple and twice as quick. When I’m sitting with nothing to do I tend to be in front of the computer and suddenly questions will just pop up. I may want to know the cultural attractions of distant countries that I fantasize of one day taking a holiday; I will know the answer as fast as my Internet connection will let me go. It is wonderful. I can do this while in my pajamas; if I am sick I can still accomplish tasks.
Google Needs…?
The following items are key elements that were found on there website, documenting their growth and progress. :
· Meanwhile the Google search engine evolved again and learned to crawl several new kinds of information. File type search added a dozen formats to Google's roster of searchable documents.
· December also brought another milestone: The Google search index reached 3 billion searchable web documents, another leap forward in Google's mission to make the world's information accessible.
· Google's web application programming interfaces (APIs) enabled software programs to query Google directly, drawing on the data in billions of web documents.
· Version 2.0 of the Google Toolbar was released in the Spring and the Google Deskbar joined it in the Fall. The Google Search Appliance spawned a new blue Google Mini, a smaller and lower-cost solution for small and medium-sized businesses that want Google quality search for their documents and sites. During the late fall, Google Print was also renamed Google Book Search, which may more accurately reflect how people use it.
· Checkout is closely tied to Google Search and Google AdWords, improving the user experience with those products and making e-commerce more efficient for everyone.
· Not long after, Google Maps began offering locally based coupons that appear in search results, and shortly after that, Google Earth launched in Japanese. In January, we also launched Google SketchUp 6, the newest version of the 3D software modeling tool in Google Earth.
· We hosted a Google Teacher Academy in Santa Monica. New team members have joined Google.org.
What's next from Google? If they continue on the path they are on I can not foresee anything that might deter me. I would just like to say “I love you Too, Google; and thank your”
